A collaborative research effort by scientists from Tohoku University, the University of Manchester, and Osaka University has led to a significant breakthrough in chiral information technology. Their findings could help usher in a new era of data storage by harnessing the unique properties of chirality.
Chirality refers to a material property where an object and its mirror image are not identical, similar to how our left and right hands differ. This distinctive characteristic creates two distinct states, which researchers believe could serve as an alternative way to store digital information, akin to the "0" and "1" states in traditional computing.
"Among various materials, helimagnets are particularly intriguing because they exhibit chirality through their magnetic structure," explains Alex Hiro Mayo from Tohoku University. "However, one of the key challenges in utilizing these materials for data storage is finding an effective way to read their chirality."
A promising solution lies in a phenomenon known as nonreciprocal electronic transport, where electrical current flows more easily in one direction than the other. This rectification effect directly correlates with the chirality of the material, making it a potential method for "reading" magnetic information.
"If we can develop a reliable way to use chirality for data storage, it could revolutionize information storage devices," Mayo adds. "However, the underlying microscopic mechanism behind this rectification effect in chiral magnets is still not fully understood. Unraveling this mechanism is crucial for establishing design principles that enhance chirality detection and improve readout performance."

By carefully manipulating the material’s magnetic structure using external magnetic fields, they were able to control its electronic behavior, uncovering the microscopic origins of nonreciprocal transport. Unlike conventional metals with intricate electronic band structures that dictate electron flow, α-EuP₃ has a simpler electronic landscape, making it an ideal system for studying the direct connection between magnetism and electron transport. The researchers observed that when the material transitioned between chiral and achiral magnetic states, the rectification effect was strong in the chiral phase but disappeared entirely in the achiral phase.
