From disaster zones to extreme environments, many areas remain difficult for humans to access reliably. This presents challenges for search-and-rescue operations, scientific research, and surveillance. Now, a research team from Osaka University and Diponegoro University in Indonesia is working on a potential solution: cyborg insects.
Cyborg insects offer several advantages over traditional robots. They consume significantly less power, making miniaturization easier, and they come "pre-built" with natural mobility and adaptability. However, past research on these biohybrid creatures has been limited to simple environments, such as flat surfaces with external navigation aids. The researchers sought to push the boundaries by testing their capabilities in more complex, real-world terrain.
Navigating the Unknown: How Cyborg Insects Work
"Building functional robots at a small scale is extremely challenging. We wanted to bypass this obstacle by keeping things simple," explains Mochammad Ariyanto, lead author of the study. "By attaching electronic devices to insects, we can avoid the intricate details of robotics engineering and focus directly on achieving our objectives."
The team equipped cockroaches with motion and obstacle-detection sensors, allowing them to leverage their natural abilities—such as climbing and wall-following—while small electronic circuits provided navigation commands when necessary. This hybrid system enabled the insects to move autonomously, avoiding obstacles and recovering from falls with minimal external control.
To test their effectiveness, the cyborg insects navigated obstacle courses featuring sandy ground, scattered stones, and wooden debris. Even in unfamiliar and challenging environments, they successfully overcame obstacles and reached their target destinations.
"I believe our cyborg insects can accomplish tasks with less effort and power than purely mechanical robots," says senior author Keisuke Morishima. "Our biohybrid navigation system addresses longstanding robotic challenges, such as self-recovery after a fall. This is key to moving beyond laboratory experiments and into real-world applications."
